King's Student Fund

You will receive a one-off grant of about EUR 575 to EUR 4,025 (£500 to £3,500) to cover your living costs, such as rent, utility bills and travel expenses. The exact amount will be determined on a case-by-case basis, based on the difference between your reasonable costs and your expected income. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not need to repay it. Grants of over £2,000 will be paid in two equal instalments: the first as soon as you are notified that your application has been approved, and the second in mid-February. This hardship fund is administered by King’s College London for its own students who find themselves in financial hardship. The grant must not be used to pay your tuition fees.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at King’s College London.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s student.
• Bursary: You are already receiving the ‘King’s Living Bursary’, the university’s financial support scheme for students from lower-income households.
• Student loan: You have applied for and been awarded the maximum maintenance loan from Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland or SAAS. If you do not wish to take up a loan for religious reasons, you must still submit an application to Student Finance and provide evidence of your other income.
• Financial need: You are in genuine financial difficulty and can provide evidence of this.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.

How to apply

Applications are made online via a Microsoft form. You will need to answer questions about your income and expenditure and attach a brief explanation of your circumstances, along with the relevant supporting documents. The application period runs from 14 October to 31 May, subject to funds remaining available. You should therefore apply as early as possible. You will be notified of the outcome by email.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund is open exclusively to Bachelor’s students at King’s College who are already receiving the ‘King’s Living Bursary’ and can demonstrate genuine financial hardship; as a result, the pool of applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria and support your application with evidence, your chances are good. As funds may run out during the year, it is crucial to apply early rather than waiting until you are broke.
