What you get

As a nursing student at the University of Nottingham, you’ll receive a grant of about EUR 5,750 (£5,000) per year from the NHS, which you’ll never have to pay back. This training grant will help you cover your living costs whilst you’re studying for your three-year BSc in Nursing. You can also receive up to around 3,450 (£3,000) euros, for example to cover childcare costs, or if you’re studying a specialist area or working in a region with a staff shortage. The NHS also covers travel costs and additional accommodation costs for your compulsory clinical placements: up to £82.50 per night for a hotel or guesthouse, or up to £37.50 per night if you’re staying with friends or family. These NHS grants are in addition to the standard tuition fee loan from Student Finance England (£9,790 for 2026/27, paid directly to the university) and a living costs loan of £5,048 to £10,830 per year. Both loans must be repaid.

Who can apply

• Course: You are studying a health-related degree programme in Nottingham funded by the NHS, such as the BSc in Nursing, the BSc in Midwifery, the Graduate Entry programme in Nursing, the Master’s in Nutrition and Dietetics, or the BSc in Physiotherapy.
• Residence: You have ‘Home’ status for UK tuition fees and normally live in England. Other students from the UK, the EU and overseas should make separate enquiries with Student Finance and the NHS.
• Previous degrees: You can still apply for this grant even if you already hold a university degree, provided that it is not in the field of healthcare in which you are currently studying.
• Age: There is no age limit for the loan to cover tuition fees. For the loan to cover living costs, you must be under the age of 60 when you start your studies.

How to apply

Applications for the NHS Training Grant and work placement costs are made via the NHS Learning Support Fund website. Tuition fee and living costs loans must be applied for separately through Student Finance England.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a scholarship awarded through a selection process. The NHS grant is an entitlement: if you meet the eligibility criteria regarding residence and your course of study, you will receive it. Your main task is to ensure that you meet the criteria and to submit an application to both the NHS and Student Finance England in good time.
