N Horton Smith Travelling Scholarship

You will receive a one-off payment of approximately 585 EUR (£500) as a grant towards the costs of studying abroad during your Bachelor’s degree. The amount will be paid out before you leave. The University of Nottingham funds this through private donations in memory of N. Horton Smith, who taught German there from 1946 until his retirement as a professor in 1979.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled on your first full-time bachelor’s degree programme at the University of Nottingham (UK campus).
• Where you go: You are spending part of your degree programme abroad, and this period abroad is related to your studies.
• No outside sponsor: Your employer or company will not cover the cost of your course. University scholarships and government grants are not an issue and will not prevent you from taking part.
• Field of study: All academic disciplines are acceptable, although knowledge of or an interest in languages, music or the visual arts would be an advantage.
• Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
• One-time only: You can only win the prize once. It will not be awarded to the same person twice.

How to apply

Once you have read the guidelines, please complete an online form during the academic year prior to your year abroad. The deadline is 22 March. Applications are assessed on a competitive basis, and in years when there are not enough compelling applications, no scholarship will be awarded.

How realistic are your chances?

Only students at the University of Nottingham who are going abroad are eligible to apply; the pool of applicants is therefore already small. A background in languages, music or art narrows it down even further, to your advantage. The number of scholarships is limited, and applications are in direct competition with one another; it is therefore important to submit a compelling application that clearly demonstrates how the trip ties in with your studies. If you fit the profile and apply in good time, your chances are good.
