What the Loughborough Sports Scholarship gives you

If you join a competitive sports team at Loughborough University in England, you will receive up to about 5,800 EUR (up to £5,000) per year in cash. The exact amount depends on your sport and your level of competition. In addition to the money, you’ll receive a free membership at Powerbase, one of the country’s largest strength and conditioning gyms, a free membership of your sport club within the Athletic Union, and a campus parking permit. Every athlete on the competitive teams also receives guidance in the areas of coaching, fitness training, sports medicine, sports science, nutrition and psychology, as well as support with day-to-day life and flexible study arrangements to enable you to train and take part in competitions. The programme is run by Loughborough Sport, the university’s sports department.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You’re studying at Loughborough University and are a member of one of its competitive sports teams.
• Degree level: You are a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD student.
• Nationality: Both students from the UK and from abroad can apply.
• Your sport: Your sport is one of the university’s competitive sports. These include athletics, swimming, cycling, triathlon, tennis, squash, badminton, netball, cricket, men’s and women’s football, field hockey, rugby union, basketball and women’s wheelchair basketball.
• Competition level: You are involved in sport at a high level, for example at international junior level, or have a track record of significant success at the top national level. The exact requirements vary from sport to sport. In some team sports, you must commit to playing for the university team.

How to apply

There is no separate application form. The coaching teams identify promising athletes whilst your university admissions process is underway. So the way to get there is to apply to study at Loughborough and become part of a competitive sports team.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is aimed at elite athletes; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small and depends on sporting achievement – it is not open to all students. If you are already competing at international junior level or at the top national level in one of the listed sports, you have a real chance. As the coaches select candidates during the admissions process, apply to the university well in advance and clearly set out your competition results.
