What the LSE Bursary gives you

You will receive up to approximately 4,900 EUR (£4,250) per year, which will be paid directly into your bank account in three instalments per year. The grant runs for the entire duration of your Bachelor’s degree, i.e. up to four years. The exact amount depends on your household income: the lower your household income, the more you will receive. At the upper end of the income range, the amount drops to around 580 EUR (£500) per year. You can spend the money on whatever you like, such as rent, living costs or tuition fees. The grant is awarded by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and does not need to be repaid.

Who can apply

• University: You are an undergraduate student at the LSE in London. Students from other universities do not have access to this.
• Fee status: Your status is ‘Home’, which means that you are treated as a UK-based student rather than an international student.
• Where you live: They come from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Financial need: Your household income is below the threshold. If you started in 2025/26, the threshold is £50,000.. If you started in 2024/25 or earlier, it is £42,875..
• Study year: You may be in your first year or in any subsequent year (2., 3. or 4.).

How to apply

There is no separate application process. You apply to ‘Student Finance’ for a maintenance loan, for which your household income will be assessed, and you agree to allow this income information to be passed on to the LSE. LSE will then automatically calculate the amount of your grant. Please ensure that your proof of income reaches LSE in good time: if it arrives after the winter term, it will not be taken into account for this academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

Your chances are excellent. Every eligible student receives the scholarship, so there is no limit on the number of places and no competition. If you are studying at the LSE at the ‘Home’ fee rate and your household income is below the threshold, you will receive the money. The only thing you need to bear in mind is the timing: so make sure you complete your means test with Student Finance in good time and agree to have the results passed on to the LSE.
