About this grant / loan
Dependants Allowance (NHS Bursary)
You will receive up to £2,644 per year (about 3,040 EUR) if you are supporting a husband, wife, partner or your first child, and up to £593 (about 680 EUR) for each additional child. This is a supplement to the NHS Scholarship, the state funding for medical and dental students in England. You will receive this supplement for as long as you are in receipt of the grant. The exact amount depends on your income: any income your dependants have reduces the amount you receive. If your partner is also a full-time student and receives grants or loans for the same dependants, you will only receive half the amount. If your partner is also receiving an NHS grant, you can split the amount equally between you, or one of you can opt out so that the other receives the full amount.
Who can apply
- You get the NHS Bursary: You are eligible for the NHS grant and are applying for this financial assistance as part of this application.
- Degree: You study medicine or dentistry, either on a 5- or 6-year undergraduate course or a 3- or 4-year graduate-entry course.
- Someone depends on you: At least one person is financially dependent on you whilst you are studying, for example a partner or a child.
- Where you live: You normally live in England and are resident there on the first day of your first year of study. If you have moved to England from another part of the United Kingdom solely to study, you are not eligible.
- Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they meet the residency requirements for England.
How to apply
You apply for the dependent allowance as part of your online application for an NHS scholarship; there is therefore no separate form. Please submit your application within 9 months of the start of your academic year.
How realistic are your chances?
As this is not a competition, no winner will be selected. If you are awarded the NHS grant and have a genuine dependant, you will receive it. The amount is set by law and is reduced by the income of your dependants. Your chances therefore depend on you meeting the eligibility criteria and providing clear evidence of who your dependants are.
