Adult Dependant's Grant

You will receive up to £3,545 per year (about 4,100 EUR) as a contribution towards the living costs of an adult who is financially dependent on you whilst you are studying full-time. This is a state grant from ‘Student Finance England’ and not a grant from the University of Greater Manchester (formerly the University of Bolton); however, the university administers this grant on behalf of its full-time students. You do not need to repay the amount unless you withdraw from your course early or have received too much. The money is paid directly into your bank account in three instalments, at the start of each term. The exact amount is means-tested and therefore depends on your income, the income of any dependant you support, and any other financial support you receive.

Who can apply

• Level of study: You are a full-time undergraduate student or a full-time student on a PGCE course or teacher training programme.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Where you live: You live in England on a permanent basis. You have applied for, or are already receiving, means-tested funding from Student Finance England.
• Your dependant: An adult is financially dependent on you, usually a spouse, partner or registered partner. If you fall under 25, this must be a spouse or registered partner, not just a partner.
• Dependant's income: The adult earns no more than £3,796 per year (approximately 4,390 EUR) and does not receive any student grant. This person cannot be your child.
• One grant only: You will only receive one allowance, even if you have more than one adult dependent.

How to apply

You must apply online via Student Finance England at gov.uk/student-finance within nine months of the start of the academic year. You must provide evidence of your household income. If you have already been assessed in a previous year, you only need to resubmit the evidence if your circumstances have changed.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a means-tested benefit. It is a standard state benefit; so, if you meet the eligibility criteria, you will receive the amount determined by the means test. The biggest hurdle is qualifying for the benefit in the first place, as you must be able to demonstrate that you have a dependent adult whose income falls below the income threshold. Submit your application within the nine-month window and provide clear proof of income – payment will then be made immediately.
