About this scholarship

The 4 New Square Chambers Scholarship

You will receive 17,400 EUR (£15,000) as a one-off grant to cover one academic year on the Bachelor’s programme in Civil Law (BCL) at the University of Oxford. The BCL is a one-year postgraduate programme in law, and the scholarship covers this one year. It is funded by 4 New Square, a law firm in London, and awarded through the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford.

Who can apply

  • Course: You are applying for the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at Oxford, or have already been admitted to the programme.
  • College: You could be at any college in Oxford.
  • Field of study: All BCL students are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to students with an interest in private law (the law governing relations between private individuals and organisations, such as contract law, property law and the law of torts).
  • Financial need: You require financial support and must provide evidence of this by completing a means-test form.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to submit a separate application. Every BCL applicant is automatically considered on the basis of their BCL application. All you need to do, therefore, is apply for the BCL programme by the deadline in December or January. If you are offered a place, you will also need to complete a means-test form, which you can access via the link in your offer letter.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is awarded to very few applicants. Only one BCL student is selected each year, and even admission to the BCL programme itself is extremely competitive. If you have been admitted, have a demonstrable financial need and show an interest in private law, you fit the profile well. However, as only one scholarship is awarded, places are scarce. Please note that the scholarship for 2026/27 has already been awarded; please therefore look out for confirmation regarding the next available year.
