About this scholarship

What the Jean Kennoway Howells Scholarship gives you

You will receive about 17,500 EUR (£15,000) for one academic year to undertake a Master’s degree in Music at the University of Edinburgh. This money will first be used to cover your tuition fees. The remaining amount will be available to you to cover your living costs. The Reid School of Music at the University of Edinburgh awards one scholarship each year. As a scholarship holder, you will be expected to engage with the postgraduate community and present your work to other students and staff.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are starting a full-time Master’s programme consisting of taught modules, i.e. a one-year, module-based programme, rather than a research-based programme.
  • Programme: You are enrolling on one of the four degree programmes at the Reid School of Music: MSc Acoustics and Music Technology, MMus Composition, MSc Sound Design or MMus Musicology.
  • New student: You are a new applicant and have not yet reached the halfway point of the programme.
  • Grades: You hold a British bachelor’s degree with a ‘First Class’ honours or 2:1, or are on track to obtain one, or hold an equivalent qualification from another country. The award of the scholarship is decided primarily on the basis of academic merit.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • No double funding: This scholarship cannot be combined with any other scholarship offered by the Edinburgh College of Art or the University of Edinburgh.

How to apply

First, submit your complete application for admission to one of the four Master’s programmes via the university’s online system. You should then apply for the scholarship via the MyEd portal. Scholarship applications will only be considered if your application for admission is complete. All applicants will be notified of the results by the end of June.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded each year, and it is restricted to four specific Master’s degree programmes in the field of music at a single university. The pool of eligible applicants is small, but competition for this single place is fierce. Selection is based primarily on academic performance; therefore, first-class or very good 2:1 results are crucial to remaining in the running. Please submit your application documents in good time before the deadline, as late scholarship applications will not be considered.
