The Atherton Scholarship (Teesside University)

The £2,500 (about 2,900 EUR) scholarship will support you throughout your three-year Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Teesside University in Middlesbrough. The funding will help you to finance activities that support your career development: voluntary work in the first year, a work placement in the second year, and the purchase of study materials or the covering of study costs in the third year. Two scholarships are awarded each year. The fund was set up by Peter Atherton, a Teesside University graduate and equity analyst, who received a scholarship himself and now wishes to offer others the same opportunity.

Who can apply

• Course: You will be starting the first year of a three-year degree programme at Teesside University Business School, for example in the fields of Accounting and Economics, Business Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Event Management, or Aviation and Tourism. Degree programmes that include a foundation year will not be considered.
• Academic potential: You can demonstrate strong academic ability.
• Career plans: You have clear goals regarding activities to further your career, such as an internship or job placement.
• Financial need: In your application, please explain your financial situation.
• Where you are from: You are a student from the UK. Applicants from the Tees Valley (with a TS postcode) will be given priority.

How to apply

You must submit a written application outlining your financial situation and your plans. The application deadline is 22 October. A panel will then make a decision based on your financial circumstances, your academic achievements and your application. You may be invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is highly selective: it is aimed exclusively at first-year economics students at a specific university, and only two places are awarded each year. Although the pool of applicants is small, competition is nevertheless fierce due to the limit of two places. If you clearly meet the eligibility criteria, can demonstrate financial need and have specific career goals, your chances are good – particularly if you are from the Tees Valley, which is a priority area for the fund. Make sure you apply well in advance of the October deadline.
