Allen Murray Centenary Scholarship

You will receive £2,000 per year (about 2,300 EUR) to help fund your science degree at University of Birmingham. The scholarship will be extended to cover your subsequent years of study, meaning it may be awarded for up to 24 months in total, provided you maintain your academic performance at the level of 2:1 (a grade in the upper second class, the second-highest classification in the UK higher education system). If you spend a year working in the business world, payments will be suspended and resumed upon your return. Professor Sir Kenneth Murray established the scholarship in memory of his parents.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are studying full-time to obtain a bachelor’s degree.
• Year of study: You’re now in your second year.
• Subject: You are studying at one of the five faculties of natural sciences: Life Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics and Astronomy.
• Fee status: You fall under the ‘Domestic (UK)’ fee category.
• Household income: Your household income is £42,875 or less, as confirmed by your regional student loan office.
• Grades: You have an outstanding academic record, as selection is based on merit.

How to apply

Applications are made via an online form on the university’s scholarship page. Places are allocated on the basis of academic merit.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: it is restricted to one university, to second-year students in five science faculties, and to those whose household income falls below a certain threshold. As a result, the group of those eligible for funding remains small. If you clearly meet these conditions and can demonstrate good grades, your chances are good.
