Amos Bursary UCL Scholarship

You will receive approximately 1,150 EUR per year (1,000 GBP) throughout your Bachelor’s degree at University College London (UCL), provided you continue to make satisfactory academic progress. Five scholarships are awarded each year. As an Amos Scholar, you will also take part in a five-year support programme. This includes personal and career coaching, mentoring (guidance from experienced professionals and peers), support with your university applications right through to graduation, work placements with corporate and academic partners, career guidance and a network of events. The scholarship is administered by UCL in collaboration with the charity ‘The Amos Bursary’, which supports young people of African and Caribbean descent on their path to higher education.

Who can apply

• Heritage: You are British with African and/or Caribbean roots.
• Study level: You are starting a full-time bachelor’s degree programme at UCL and have already been offered a place.
• Field of study: Any subject is acceptable. You do not have to study a STEM subject.
• Schooling: You attended a state school, an academy or a college in London or the West Midlands throughout your secondary education. Private schools do not count.
• Fee status: You have UK fee-payer status, are classified as a home student, and are entitled to live and work in the United Kingdom.
• Grades: You must have at least six GCSE qualifications with grades ranging from 9 to 6 (or equivalent qualifications).
• Financial or social background: You meet at least two additional criteria from a list, for example, a household income of less than 40,000 GBP, free school meals, being a single-parent family, being in care, or being the first in your family to study at university.

The Amos Scholarship is open to all young people who meet these criteria. Although the older UCL page still only mentions male students, this is no longer the case.

How to apply

Applications are made online via the Amos Bursary platform. The application deadline for the next cohort (the group starting together) is 20 August 2026, and the programme runs from mid-August. Everyone who submits a valid application will be invited to a welcome event. Selected applicants will then be invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria for this scholarship are very strict. Applicants must be of African or Caribbean origin, have attended a state school in London or the West Midlands, have been offered a place at UCL, and meet at least two indicators of financial or social disadvantage. This keeps the pool of eligible applicants small, meaning that a well-suited candidate faces less competition. However, as only five scholarships are awarded each year, the final selection process is still highly competitive, which is why strong academic performance and a compelling personal statement are crucial.
