Crankstart Scholarship (University of Oxford)

You will receive a grant of up to about EUR 7,350 (GBP 6,370) per year for each year of your Bachelor’s degree at Oxford. A grant is a sum of money that you do not have to pay back. The amount depends on your household income. If this is 7,500 GBP or less per year, you will receive 6,370 GBP (approximately 7,350 EUR) per year. If it is between 7,500 and 32,500 GBP, you will receive 5,490 GBP (approximately 6,330 EUR) per year. In addition to this funding, you can apply for a work placement grant of up to 3,200 GBP (approximately 3,690 EUR), gain access to work placements abroad and benefit from personalised career guidance, i.e. one-to-one sessions with a careers adviser. You will also receive a travel allowance if you live more than 80 miles from Oxford. If you have ever been in care or are estranged from your family, you can apply for an additional grant of up to 3,500 GBP (approx. 4,040 EUR) per year, which you do not have to repay. The programme is funded by a donation from Sir Michael Moritz and Harriet Heyman and has supported over 3,500 students since 2012.

Who can apply

• University: You are starting your first bachelor’s degree at the University of Oxford.
• Subject and college: Every subject and every Oxford college counts.
• Residence: You have been living in the UK for at least three years, and not just to study here.
• Household income: According to your regional funding agency, your household has an annual income of 32,500 GBP (approximately 37,500 EUR) or less.

How to apply

No separate application is required. From mid-September, every student who meets the criteria will be automatically offered the scholarship, based on the means test carried out by your regional funding agency. Notifications of award will be sent out on an ongoing basis until 30 May of the relevant academic year; it is therefore advisable to have the means test carried out at an early stage.

How realistic are your chances?

There is no selection process, so it is not a matter of outshining other applicants. If you are studying for your first degree at Oxford, meet the residency requirement and your household income is no more than 32,500 GBP, you will receive the scholarship automatically. The most important factor you can influence yourself is the timetable. Make sure that your regional funding agency completes your means test by 30 May. Getting accepted to Oxford is the tricky part; the funding will then follow automatically.
