Blackburn Bursary at the University of Lincoln

You will receive £1,500 (about 1,750 EUR) for each completed year of study, paid in two instalments. You will receive £500 (approximately 580 EUR) as soon as your application has been approved and you have enrolled. You will receive the remaining £1,000 (approximately 1,170 EUR) once you have successfully completed the academic year. If you have to repeat a year, the second instalment will only be paid out once you have passed the resit examination. You will never have to repay the money. The University of Lincoln awards this scholarship to enable young people who have grown up in the care of local authorities to start and complete a degree course.

Who can apply

• Care background: You were in the care of your local authority or living in accommodation provided by it for at least 13 weeks. This period ended after your 16 birthday, and you did not move back in with your parents before starting your degree.
• Age: At the start of your course, you will be at 25.
• Fee status: You are classified as a ‘Home’ student in accordance with the decision of the funding body (e.g. Student Finance England). Students with EU or international fee status are not eligible to apply.
• Degree: You are enrolled on your first bachelor’s degree programme. Part-time study is permitted provided that it comprises at least 25% of the full-time study load.
• Field of study: Any bachelor’s degree subject is fine.
• Not already funded: You have not yet received this grant for the same year and are not in receipt of a hall of residence/supported accommodation grant.

How to apply

Please complete the Blackburn Scholarship application form and email it to the Student Finance Team. There is no fixed deadline. The university has advisers for former care leavers (young people who grew up in care) who can help you with this process.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is not a competition. It is aimed at a very specific target group: former children in care under the age of 25 who are undertaking their first bachelor’s degree at the University of Lincoln. A fixed amount is paid out, rather than selecting a small number of winners. If you meet the eligibility criteria regarding time spent in care and age, and can provide evidence of your time in care, you should receive the scholarship. Apply for it as soon as you have enrolled so that the first instalment can be paid out.
