Teacher training bursaries at the University of Greenwich

You will receive a tax-free bursary, which you will never have to repay. The amount depends on your course of study and is paid out over the entire duration of your teacher training. This is government funding from the UK Department for Education, which is channelled to you via the University of Greenwich.

The amount you receive depends on your subject. For secondary school teaching, the allowance for Biology is approximately 30,000 (£26,000) euros and for Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics approximately 34,000 (£29,000) euros. Through a separate scholarship scheme, the amounts for chemistry, mathematics and physics can be increased to around 36,000 (£31,000) euros; however, you cannot receive both a student grant and a scholarship at the same time. For further education courses, the amount is around 34,000 (£31,000) for computer science, engineering, mathematics or natural sciences, around 17,000 (£15,000) euros for special educational needs and around 11,700 (£10,000) euros for English.

In addition to the grant, you can apply to Student Finance England for a loan of up to £9,535 to cover your tuition fees, and a loan of up to £13,762. to cover your living costs. If you have children or a disability, additional grants are available to you.

Who can apply

• Course: You are undertaking teacher training in England as part of a qualifying initial teacher training programme, either for secondary education or for further education. The Bachelor’s degree programme in ‘Primary Education’ does not lead to this qualification.
• Degree (secondary): You hold a degree (Bachelor’s, 2:1, 2:2, Master’s or PhD).
• School qualifications (further education): You have achieved a GCSE grade of 4 (C) or higher in English and Maths.
• Subject knowledge (further education): You must hold at least a 3-level qualification in the subject you will be teaching, or have relevant professional experience in that field.
• Plan: You would like to work as a teacher in England after graduating.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities. The deadlines for scholarships for international applicants in physics are 7 May 2026.

How to apply

You will receive the application form as soon as you have accepted a place on the course and met the entry requirements. Your educational provider will then take care of applying for the scholarship. Applications for further education are processed in the order in which they are received, and funding will cease once the budget has been exhausted. You should therefore apply as early as possible.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not an award that is won through competition with others. If you are enrolled on an eligible degree programme in a qualifying subject and meet the requirements regarding graduation and grades, you will receive the specified amount for your subject. The biggest risks are choosing a subject for which no scholarship is available, or applying too late for further education, as funding is allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and may run out. Choose a subject from the list and apply straight away – then your chances are good.
