Haworth Scholarship at the University of Birmingham

You will receive a one-off payment of about 2,340 EUR (£2,000), which will be paid by bank transfer during the first year of your Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. This is an academic merit award from the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, named after the chemist Sir Norman Haworth. Each year, the ten highest-ranking first-year students who meet the eligibility criteria receive this award; therefore, there is no need to complete a separate form.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are in the first year of your Bachelor’s degree (BSc or MSci).
• Field of study: You are studying chemistry in Birmingham – for example, chemistry, chemistry with a year’s work placement, combined with a modern foreign language, with medicinal chemistry, with sustainability or with business studies.
• University: You’re studying at the University of Birmingham.
• Fee status: Once you have been admitted, you will be treated as a UK student for the purposes of tuition fees.
• UCAS choice: You applied via UCAS on 30 June at 6 o’clock, listing the Chemistry degree programme at Birmingham as one of your five original choices, and selecting this programme as your first choice.
• Grades: Your ranking against other students is based primarily on your A-level results. The greatest weighting is given to your grade in Chemistry and your three best A-level grades, followed by other A/AS-level grades, other UCAS points and GCSE grades. The university converts international qualifications.

How to apply

You do not apply for the scholarship directly. Apply to the university via UCAS by 6 on 30 June, and list the Chemistry degree programme as your first choice. If you meet the requirements, the university will automatically contact you during the first semester. The scholarship will then be awarded based on the grade ranking mentioned above.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a ‘Top-10’ scholarship, which is restricted to students paying UK tuition fees who are studying a specific degree programme in chemistry at a specific university; the pool of applicants is therefore small. Your chances depend on how you perform in your A-levels, particularly your grade in chemistry. If you go to Birmingham to study chemistry with outstanding results, you have a real chance. If your grades are solid but not outstanding, competition for the ten places is fierce.
