About this scholarship
Derek Ogston & Margaret Carlaw Music Scholarship
You will receive about EUR 1,750 per year (GBP 1,500) for the full four years of your degree, amounting to a total of approximately 7,000 euros (6,000 pounds). Two scholarships are awarded each year, one named after Derek Ogston and one after Margaret Carlaw. They are awarded by the University of Aberdeen’s School of Music and are funded by two donors who have supported the School for many years.
Who can apply
- Degree: You are starting a full-time Bachelor’s degree in Music at the University of Aberdeen: a BMus, a BMus (Education) or a BMus (Music & Communities).
- Offer: You have applied for a place at university and are accepting the university’s offer – whether subject to conditions or unconditional – on a binding basis.
- Talent: You are an outstanding singer or instrumentalist.
- Residence: You live in the UK and fall into the ‘Home Fees’ category. This fee category applies to students who are resident in the UK, not to international students.
- Where you study: The money is intended solely for your studies in Aberdeen. You cannot take it with you to another university.
How to apply
Please submit the application form to the University’s Admissions Office by 17 May. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to attend an audition during the week in which your semester begins. You can obtain the application and recommendation forms from the university’s funding database.
How realistic are your chances?
The eligibility criteria for this award are quite strict: you must be a music student based in the UK who is starting a BMus degree at a specific university, and only two scholarships are awarded each year. This keeps the pool of applicants small, but selection is based on an audition, so your playing or singing must stand out. If you clearly meet the criteria and prepare well for the audition, your chances are good.
