Merit Scholarship at Swansea University

You will receive 2,000 GBP (about 2,340 EUR) over three years. The amount will be paid out at the start of each of your first three years of study in three equal instalments of 670 GBP (approximately 780 EUR) each. Swansea University in Wales awards this grant in recognition of outstanding examination results at the end of secondary school. You can combine this grant with other forms of financial support, such as local education grants. To receive the second and third payments, you must achieve an overall average of at least 60% each year, as well as a minimum of 55% in each module.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are starting a full-time bachelor’s degree at Swansea University.
• Grades: You must have achieved grades AAB at A-Level or an equivalent qualification. The A-Level in ‘General Studies’ does not count towards this requirement. Equivalent qualifications include 34 points in the International Baccalaureate, or a grade A and a grade B in the Welsh Baccalaureate.
• Fee status: You are a fee-paying student from the UK. International students and students from the EU should instead apply via Swansea University’s separate international scholarship programmes.
• Field of study: All degree subjects are eligible (single, double and combined majors). Exceptions are degree programmes funded by professional bodies, such as social work, nursing, midwifery, medicine for career changers, and other degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences.
• New student: You are a first-year student. You are not eligible if you are an exchange, visiting or associate student, or if you were previously enrolled as a full-time student at Swansea University or another higher education institution.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. If you apply to Swansea University and achieve grades of AAB (or an equivalent result), you will automatically be awarded the scholarship. You must accept it and provide your bank details in the university’s finance system by the end of your first semester; otherwise, the offer will lapse.

How realistic are your chances?

Any fee-paying student from the UK who achieves the grade AAB and enrols on an eligible degree programme will receive the grant – so there is no competition for places. Your chances depend on just one thing: achieving the grade AAB at A-level or an equivalent qualification. Achieve this grade and start an eligible degree programme – then the grant is yours.
