Transport Planning Scholarship at UWE Bristol

You will receive a one-off scholarship of approximately 11,600 EUR (£10,000) to cover your tuition fees for a Master’s degree programme specialising in transport at UWE Bristol. The funding comes from one of two UK charities that support students in the field of transport: the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund and the Brian Large Bursary Fund. Each year, they award a small number of these £10,000 scholarships to individuals preparing for a career in transport planning and road construction.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are applying for a Master’s degree programme in the field of transport, or have already been admitted to one. At UWE, these are the MSc in ‘Transport Planning’ or the MSc in ‘Transport Engineering and Planning’.
• Enrolment: The Brian Large Fund requires applicants to be full-time students. The Rees-Jeffreys Fund also accepts part-time students.
• Residence: You live in the UK. The prize is awarded as part of a nationwide competition for transport students in the UK.
• Career goal: You can demonstrate your clear commitment to a career in the UK road and transport sector.
• Financial need: As far as the Rees-Jeffreys Scholarship is concerned, you would not be able to afford the course without financial support.
• Age and background: Applicants of all ages and from all walks of life are welcome to apply, including those who are already well established in their careers.

How to apply

You cannot apply directly to either fund. Instead, your university will put you forward; you should therefore speak to your programme director first. For the Brian Large Fund, your head of department or academic tutor will recommend you following a personal interview. For the Rees-Jeffreys Fund, the university submits candidates in June, and the trustees make their decision in July.

How realistic are your chances?

Only a handful of these scholarships are awarded each year (four Brian Large Scholarships were awarded for 2025/26), and as applicants come from across the UK, competition is fierce. Your chances depend on whether your tutor nominates you; therefore, speaking to them at an early stage is the crucial step. What sets applicants apart is a genuine, demonstrable commitment to a career in transport, as well as financial need to undertake the Rees-Jeffreys programme.
