About this award / prize

Award of the "Juristische Blätter"

First place will receive a cash prize of 2,500 EUR, awarded for an outstanding legal essay on any area of Austrian law. Second place is rewarded with a book voucher worth 1,000 EUR, and third place with one worth 500 EUR. The winning entries will be published in the journal, and a prize may be shared by several authors. The prize is awarded once a year by Verlag Österreich, the publisher of ‘Juristische Blätter’, a renowned Austrian legal journal that has been in publication since 1872.

Who can apply

  • Age: You have not yet turned 35.
  • Your paper: You must submit an academic paper on Austrian law. This must either be unpublished and comply with the journal’s requirements in terms of style and length, or have been published in the *Juristische Blätter* no more than one year prior to your application.
  • Field: Every area of Austrian law.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Where you study: It doesn’t matter which university you attended or what degree you have. What counts is your age and the quality of your work.
  • Not accepted: Diploma theses and other qualification works are not reviewed in the form you submit them.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by email. Please attach your paper, a short covering letter, a brief CV and any academic certificates relevant to your work to your email. The deadline for applications is 31 May. The journal’s editors will assess the submissions by a simple majority; their decision is final.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single top honour awarded solely on the basis of the quality of an individual academic paper; consequently, the prize is awarded for a compelling, publication-ready paper rather than a completed form. The age limit of 35 and the focus on Austrian law restrict the pool of entrants, but anyone who meets the criteria may enter. If your paper is truly original and ready for publication in a prestigious academic journal, you have a genuine chance of success. An ordinary seminar paper will not stand out.
