About this scholarship

What you get

You receive a mobility grant of 500 EUR per month for each clinical tertial (a practical training block in a hospital department) abroad, for up to 12 months at a partner university of the Medical University of Vienna anywhere in the world. You can also apply for a language-course subsidy of up to 450 EUR to prepare for your stay. The Medical University of Vienna pays the grant from its international cooperation agreements, separately from ERASMUS+ and SEMP. The money comes afterwards, once you hand in your final documents and your results abroad are recognised. There is no legal entitlement: funding depends on the available budget and the number of applicants.

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying medicine (Diplom programme) at the Medical University of Vienna.
  • Study phase: You are in your 5th year. The grant covers the 5th-year tertials abroad, not the clinical-practical year (KPJ).
  • Grades: Your results are crucial. The ranking of university places is determined primarily by your weighted average mark for all courses you have passed.
  • Extra points: Social engagement and personal obstacles to going abroad count in your favour when places are ranked.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled as medical students in Vienna.

How to apply

Registration takes place via the ‘Mobility-Online’ portal during the application period. This begins on 3 November and lasts for approximately two weeks (from 3 to 19 November for the academic year 2026/27). During the same round, ERASMUS, SEMP and the cooperation programme are considered together, and you specify up to six destination locations in order of preference. Allocations are announced in mid-December, and you then accept or decline them online.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is open only to Vienna medical students in their 5th year, so the applicant pool is small. Places go by grade ranking and by preference order, so strong results and flexible destination choices both help. Since funding has no legal entitlement and depends on the yearly budget, apply within the November window and list several realistic destinations.
