About this award / prize

Benefit

For an outstanding doctoral thesis (dissertation) in the field of ceramics and refractory materials, you will receive a one-off award of cash prize as well as public recognition. The prize is awarded once a year as part of the University’s academic ceremony. The exact amount of the prize money is not disclosed. The prize is funded by Hellmut Longin, a graduate of the Technical University of Leoben and a former manager in the steel and refractory industries.

Who can apply

  • University: You are a researcher at the Technical University of Leoben (Montanuniversität Leoben) in Austria.
  • Field: At the Chair of Ceramics (formerly the Chair of Rock Metallurgy), you work on ceramics and refractory materials.
  • Level: You have a PhD.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

Please submit your work to the Chair of Ceramics at Leoben University of Technology, addressed to the Chair’s professor. A winner is selected each year, and the prize is awarded during the academic ceremony.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is presented to only a very small number of candidates. It is awarded to researchers from a single university in a specific field for a completed doctoral thesis. Each year, only a very small number of people meet the criteria. If your doctoral thesis deals with ceramics or refractory materials at the Chair of Ceramics and your findings are outstanding, your chances are good. The prize recognises the quality of the research, not a polished application.
