University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Vienna/Austria) - Support for short-term stays abroad

What you get

You will receive up to 500 EUR per month for accommodation (approximately 125 EUR per week) as well as up to 1,000 EUR towards travel for a research trip abroad related to your final thesis. The funding is intended to cover the costs of your own laboratory work, field research or scientific collections at a host institution outside Austria, carried out in collaboration with or under the supervision of international experts. It is provided by the Office for International Relations (BIB) at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni). The duration of the funding depends on your degree programme and the scope of your thesis: approximately 3.5 months for a thesis in veterinary medicine or biomedicine, up to 5 months for a Master’s thesis, and up to 8 months for a PhD in veterinary medicine. You will receive one subsidised trip per thesis.

Who can apply

• University: You are a full-time student at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna.
• Field of study: All degree programmes at the university are eligible (Veterinary Medicine, Biomedicine and Biotechnology, Equine Science, and the Master’s programmes).
• Progress: You have completed at least four semesters.
• Thesis: You are undertaking your final-year dissertation abroad and have already registered your topic with the Student Office.
• Duration: The stay lasts at least 5 days and takes place outside Austria (in any country worldwide).
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Exchange students and students with a current employment contract at the university are excluded.
• Other funding first: If you are eligible for an Austrian study grant or another mobility grant (a grant to fund a period of study or research abroad, such as Erasmus+ or the Marshall Plan grant), you must claim this first. This grant is intended solely to top up any shortfall in funding.

How to apply

You can apply for your stay at any time via the Mobility Online Portal, but no later than one month before the start of your stay. For stays of two months or longer, please send an email to the Office for International Relations two months before the start of your stay. The Office and the Vice-Rector’s Office will make a decision within one month of receiving your application.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a small group of people: you must be studying at this specific university, have completed four semesters and be writing your final thesis abroad. If you clearly meet these requirements and have already found a host institution, your chances are good. Apply at least one month in advance and remember that you must first make use of any other funding to which you are entitled.
