About this award / prize
What you get
You can win a cash prize of 1,000 EUR by singing songs by the Viennese composer Walter Jurmann (1903–1971). He wrote hits such as ‘Veronika, der Lenz ist da’ and ‘San Francisco’. The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MUK) organises this competition every two years. It is funded by Jurmann’s heirs and the Viennese Friends of his Work. Three students win a prize in each edition. The winners perform at a public concert with free admission. Some former winners have gone on to take leading roles at the major Viennese theatres, the Volksoper and in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Who can apply
- Your university: You are enrolled at the MUK in Vienna.
- Your programme: You are studying singing and opera, musical theatre, drama or classical operetta.
- What you perform: You must sing three songs, chansons or numbers by Walter Jurmann. At least one of these must be in English or French. You must provide the musical accompaniment yourself.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at the MUK.
How to apply
You are taking part as a current MUK student. The deadline for entries is 15 March. The competition consists of two rounds: a preliminary round, followed by a final in front of a jury. The prizes will be awarded during a public concert.
How realistic are your chances?
This is a competition with a limited number of participants. As only MUK students from a few specific vocal and drama courses are eligible to take part, the field of entrants is small. If you are one of them and prepare a compelling Jurmann programme, including the prescribed piece in English or French, your chances are good. Success depends on your live performance before the jury, not on your application documents.
