What the ISBK scholarship gives you

You will receive a scholarship of approximately 1,440 EUR. This covers the participation fee for an intensive course at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg. The courses take place over two to three weeks at Hohensalzburg Fortress and in the Untersberg quarry, and are led by leading artists from around the world. Some scholarship programmes provide a grant towards travel and living expenses in addition to the course fees. The Summer Academy was founded in 1953 by Oskar Kokoschka and awards around 100 scholarships each year as part of various funding programmes.

Who can apply

• Field: You are working or studying in the field of fine art or – for the architecture degree programme – in the field of architecture. The modules cover painting, sculpture, film, video, sound, comics, curating, art criticism and writing.
• Level: You are a school pupil, a university student or a young artist. Some of these opportunities are aimed at school pupils and university students from Salzburg or Eastern Europe.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Some job vacancies are aimed at specific target groups, such as people who have fled their home country or students from Eastern European countries.
• Portfolio: You can submit up to 10 images of your own work. You do not need to do this for the theoretical courses in curating, art criticism and writing.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Summer Academy’s application portal. Please upload your application form and a PDF portfolio. By submitting this application, you are also registering for the course, so no separate registration is required. The application deadline is 10 April. An independent panel will select the scholarship recipients and announce the results by the end of April.

How realistic are your chances?

The selection process is highly competitive: one programme recently selected 45 scholarship recipients from 300 applicants, and the selection panel will assess you on the basis of your portfolio. As there are around 100 scholarships spread across many programmes, it is best to apply for a programme that is tailored to your specific target group, such as the programmes for Eastern Europe or Salzburg. A compelling, well-put-together portfolio submitted by the deadline makes all the difference.
