Merit scholarship of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna

As a reward for outstanding academic achievement, you will receive a one-off payment of 750 EUR or more for the academic year 750 EUR/25. The exact amount and the number of scholarships depend on the funds made available each year by the Austrian Ministry of Science. The University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni) awards the scholarship on the basis of outstanding academic achievement rather than financial need.

Who can apply

• University: You are a full-time student at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna.
• Programme: All degrees awarded by Vetmeduni are recognised: the veterinary degree, the Bachelor’s, the Master’s and doctoral programmes.
• Grades: Your weighted average of the exams that count towards 2024/25 is at least 1.10. Under the Austrian grading system, 1.0 is the highest possible mark.
• Study progress: To obtain the veterinary degree, you must earn at least 34 ECTS credits over the course of the year. To obtain a PhD, you must submit a dissertation and achieve a grade of ‘very good’.
• Timing: You are still within the standard duration of your degree programme, plus one additional semester.
• Nationality: You are an Austrian citizen or a foreign or stateless student who is treated as equivalent under the Austrian Study Grant Act (StudFG).

How to apply

Please email the completed application form and proof of nationality to the university’s scholarship office. The application period runs from 15 September to 30 October 2025. Only examinations that are already recorded in your academic transcript by the deadline will be taken into account. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of scholarships available, candidates will be ranked according to their grade point average and the number of subject examinations they have passed.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is granted on a highly selective basis. Only students at Vetmeduni with a near-perfect grade point average of 1.10 or better are eligible, so the pool of eligible candidates is small. If your grades meet this threshold and you fulfil the credit point requirements, your prospects are good. Even if you meet all the criteria, there is no guarantee that you will receive the award. You should therefore submit your complete application documents in good time to be included in the ranking list.
