What the Joint Study scholarship gives you

You will receive a grant of monthly grant of about 400 EUR for up to 4 months to spend a semester at a partner university outside Europe or in the United Kingdom. The exact amount depends on the country in question; for example, 556 EUR for the USA, 918 EUR for Japan, 490 EUR for the UK, and 388 EUR for Australia, Canada, Mexico, Peru, New Zealand or Israel. In addition to the monthly amount, you will also receive:

• a one-off travel allowance of 201 EUR for the United Kingdom, up to 1,411 EUR for New Zealand;
• a one-off grant of 360 EUR (720 EUR for Australia);
• up to 300 EUR for vaccinations;
• up to 300 EUR for special costs.

The host university usually waives the tuition fees, which amount to between 5,000 and 25,000 euros. Destinations include the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, the UK, Indonesia and Israel. The programme is run by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).

Who can apply

• Where you study: At the time of your application, you are enrolled on a Master’s programme at BOKU Vienna.
• Field of study: This offer applies to all BOKU Master’s programmes, and regardless of your field of study, all partner universities are available to you.
• Grades: Your weighted average mark is 2.30 or higher on the Austrian grading scale, where 1 is the highest mark.
• Credits if your Bachelor's was elsewhere: If you did not obtain your Bachelor’s degree at BOKU, you must have earned at least 20 ECTS credits as part of your BOKU Master’s programme.
• Age: You are 35 or younger.
• Languages: You must have a command of English at level B2 or above. For destinations in Latin America, you will also need a command of Spanish at level B1 or above.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at BOKU Vienna.
• Combination: This scholarship cannot be combined with the BOKU funding scholarship.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the ‘Mobility Online’ portal. There are two application deadlines per year: on 7 January for the autumn/winter semester and on 26 May for the spring/summer semester, both at 23:59. An advisory board, comprising one representative from each degree programme and the team at BOKU International Relations, usually reaches a decision within around three weeks. Your academic record, motivation, language skills and overall impression are taken into account.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is restricted to Master’s students at BOKU Vienna who meet a specific grade threshold and age limit, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is already small. If you meet these criteria, write a compelling personal statement and remain flexible regarding your chosen destination, your chances are good. You must specify a second-choice university and may, if necessary, be nominated for a place there instead. Places depend on the exchange balance with the respective partner institutions; it is therefore advantageous to apply early and not to commit to a specific country.
