IMechE Group Project Award

You will receive up to £200 (about 230 EUR) per group member for a group engineering activity, with funding available for a maximum of 8 members, i.e. up to £1,600 (approximately 1,840 EUR) for the whole group. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) awards this grant to support teams in carrying out engineering projects. It generally covers participation in a conference, competition or event, as well as the completion of a group project as part of a degree programme.

Who can apply

• Membership: All participants in your group must be members of the IMechE. Members from all over the world are welcome to apply.
• Group size: Your group has no more than 8 members.
• Field: The role must be in the field of engineering.
• Not eligible: Teams taking part in an IMechE Challenge or Formula Student are not eligible for this prize.
• Repeat rule: If you win, you will not be able to apply for the same event again for 3 years.

How to apply

One person – the group coordinator – submits an application on behalf of the whole group to the IMechE Awards Team by email. There is no fixed deadline, so you can apply at any time of the year. However, you must submit your form at least one month before the event, and you cannot apply once it has already taken place. You will also need three references to support the group’s application.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is aimed at a select group: all members of your team must already be IMechE members, and the activity must be a genuine engineering project. This means that the number of teams eligible to take part remains small. If your group clearly meets the criteria, you apply in good time and already have the three references to hand, your chances are good. It is important to apply early, as the application must be received by the committee at least one month before the start of the project.
