About this scholarship

Partial Doctoral Financing at UMONS

You will receive a PhD scholarship worth 1,420 EUR per month (money to cover your living costs whilst working on your PhD thesis) at the University of Mons (UMONS) in Belgium. This amounts to approximately 17,000 euros per year. The funding covers a period of up to 4 years, divided into 2 years and 2 renewable years. UMONS refers to this as a ‘partial’ scholarship, as the university covers half the costs and an external co-funding body covers the other half. This co-funding partner may be another Belgian or foreign university, a company or an external organisation. The UMONS Research Council (CRECH) decides who receives the scholarship.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You hold a Master’s degree or will be awarded one in the calendar year in which the funding begins.
  • Grades: You achieved a mark of over 14/20 in both your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, or were amongst the top 25% students in your year group. If your grades are from a foreign system that is not directly comparable, your supervisor will instead provide a letter setting out the reasons for your outstanding academic performance.
  • No other income: You are not currently receiving any other income from employment.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
  • A co-funder: A second funding body (another higher education institution, a company or an organisation) must provide the other half of the funding. If this partner is a higher education institution, you must enter into an agreement on joint supervision (co-tutelle).

How to apply

Your prospective supervisor initiates the process, not you. The supervisor should contact the UMONS Research Administration (AVRE) as early as possible and submit the application form on your behalf. The Faculty Council will then review the applications and draw up a ranking list of candidates. The application deadline is 30 June.
