About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive up to 12,000 EUR to cover your travel expenses for one academic year. The amount will be paid as a one-off advance within one month of the decision being made. The grant covers up to 100% of your approved travel budget, for example for an accessible vehicle, taxi journeys or the costs of a companion to assist you whilst travelling. The funding is provided by the Basque Government (Gobierno Vasco). You must reapply each year. The grant may run for one year longer than the official duration of your studies; for engineering and architecture degree programmes, it may even run for two years longer.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled on a full-time degree programme at an institution in the Basque Country (Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco).
  • Level: You are studying for a bachelor’s degree (Grado), a master’s degree, a degree in the fine arts, a military or religious qualification, or the university entrance course for people over the age of 25.
  • Field of study: Any subject.
  • Residence: You were registered (empadronado) in a Basque municipality up until 31 December of the year prior to the start of the course.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply. If you are not a Spanish national, you must hold Spanish nationality or a valid residence permit in Spain. A student visa alone is not sufficient.
  • Disability: You have a recognised disability of at least 33%, as certified by your regional assessment centre (Diputación Foral).
  • Mobility: You can provide evidence that you have difficulty using public transport. This is assessed using the scale set out in the Spanish Real Decreto 1971/1999 (Situation A, B or C, or at least 7 points) or a mobility impairment of at least 25%, as set out in Real Decreto 888/2022.
  • No higher degree: You do not yet hold a qualification that is at or above the level of the qualification you are aiming for.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online via the Basque Government’s electronic portal (Sede Electrónica). The application period runs every year from mid-July to 30 September.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very narrowly defined: you must live in the Basque Country, be studying there and have a certified disability with proven mobility limitations, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria, your chances are good. The total budget is set at 100,000 EUR and will be paid out until it is exhausted; it is therefore advisable to apply early in the application period.
