About this award / prize
González Llanos, Concepción Arenal, Ingeniero Comerma and Antonio Usero Research Awards
You receive a one-off prize of 10,000 EUR for a research project. This amount is before tax. The prizes are run by the Municipality of Ferrol, in northwest Spain, together with the University of A Coruña (UDC). Each award is named after a different figure and covers a different university field. The awards rotate on a two-year cycle. In even years (such as 2026) three prizes are open: the Concepción Arenal (social and legal sciences), the Ingeniero Comerma (arts and humanities) and the Antonio Usero (health sciences). In odd years the González Llanos (engineering and architecture) is open. Your work can be purely theoretical, based on concrete cases, or a proposal for the future.
Who can apply
- Who you are: You may apply either as an individual with a professional or academic background, or as a team comprising professionals and academics.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Field of study: Your research must fall within the field of the prize for which you are applying, for example, social sciences and law, arts and humanities, or health sciences.
- Where you study: You do not need to be enrolled at a university.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via the City of Ferrol’s electronic platform (sede electrónica). The application period opens on the day after the call for applications is published in the Provincial Official Gazette (BOP) and runs for 30 calendar days.
How realistic are your chances?
Only one prize is awarded per discipline, meaning there is direct competition within your discipline and the work itself is assessed on its merits. These are little-known regional awards with no restrictions regarding nationality or enrolment status, so the field of entrants is not particularly large, but everything depends on the quality of your research work. A well-crafted, well-reasoned paper in the right field has a strong chance of success. Submit your paper within the 30-day window to ensure you are not excluded on the grounds of timing.
