About this scholarship
What you get
You will spend an academic year studying at a partner university in the United States. You will not be required to pay any tuition fees, examination fees, laboratory fees or library fees whilst there. This exemption stems from a partnership between the Instituto Franklin-UAH, a research institute at the University of Alcalá near Madrid, and the US university. In the 2026–27 round, a place at the University of Central Missouri is available. Please note the restrictions: there are no cash grant. You will continue to pay your regular tuition fees to the University of Alcalá and will be responsible for the costs of accommodation, health insurance and living expenses in the USA, which amount to approximately 17,000 EUR per year.
Who can apply
- Your university: You are enrolled as a Bachelor’s student at the University of Alcalá (UAH). Exchange students who are not undertaking a full degree programme at the UAH are not eligible to apply.
- Field of study: Your degree must be in one of the eligible subject areas. For 2026-27, these include Biology, Environmental Sciences, Economics, International Economics and Business Administration, Hispanic Studies, English Studies, Finance, History, Humanities, Computer Science, Modern Languages and Translation Studies, and Psychology.
- Study progress: At the time of your application, you must have earned at least 60 ECTS credits (a full first year of study) and must successfully complete your entire first year of study before your departure.
- English: You must have at least B2 level English language skills, as demonstrated by a TOEFL iBT score of 80 or above.
- Where you live: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, but must be resident in Spain and enrolled at the UAH.
- No double funding: If you are a dual-degree student who has already received a scholarship for international mobility (funding for studying abroad), you are not eligible to apply.
How to apply
Please send your application by email to the Instituto Franklin-UAH. The application deadline for the 2026-27 round is 9 January 2026. A selection panel will assess each application on the basis of academic performance, TOEFL results, the personal statement and references. You must also have been admitted by the host university in the US.
How realistic are your chances?
The selection criteria are very strict: only UAH Bachelor’s students from a limited number of departments who have successfully completed their first year of study and can demonstrate a TOEFL score of 80+ are eligible to apply. In the 2026–27 round, only one place is awarded, so competition is fierce even with a small number of applicants. Grades carry the most weight in the assessment, so a well-suited applicant with top marks and a solid English score stands a real chance.
