About this scholarship

Grants for research on Ávila-related topics

You will receive a one-off grant of 4,000 EUR under the ‘General’ section or a 3,000 EUR under the ‘Early-career researchers’ section. The scholarship is intended to fund an independent research project on the province of Ávila in Spain. Your topic may be from any academic discipline: history, art, natural sciences, law, economics, medicine, engineering, agriculture, tourism, renewable energy or digital technologies – provided it relates to Ávila. You will have up to 1 years from the date of notification of the award to submit your completed research report. The grants are awarded by the ‘Institución Gran Duque de Alba’, a cultural institution of the Provincial Council (Diputación) of Ávila. Each year, 10 grants are awarded in the general category and 5 in the ‘Young Researchers’ category, totalling 55,000 EUR.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You must hold at least a bachelor’s degree (Grado or Licenciatura). You may apply individually or as a team.
  • Age (Young Researchers track): To enter the 3,000-EUR competition, you and every team member must be under 35 at the time of application. There is no age restriction for the general competition.
  • Nationality: Open to any nationality.
  • Field of study: Any topic is permitted, provided your project is related to the province of Ávila.
  • Your project: It must be an original work, a piece of your own that has not yet been published. This also includes work carried out as part of a doctoral thesis.
  • No recent grant: You are not eligible to apply if you have already received one of these grants in any of the three previous funding rounds. You are also not eligible to apply if you have already received funding for the same project from another source.
  • Tax status: You must be up to date with your tax and social security contributions.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Diputación de Ávila’s online portal. You must submit an anonymised research proposal and a CV. The deadline for applications is 24 September. An expert committee assesses each project on the basis of the research proposal and the CV, and the President of the Diputación makes a decision within three months of the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut narrowly by topic: your project must genuinely relate to the province of Ávila, which keeps the applicant pool small. With 15 grants shared across many fields each year, a solid original proposal tied clearly to Ávila has real prospects. Weak proposals can leave places unfilled, so a well-argued project stands out.
