DAAD Study Scholarship for a Master's in Germany

You will receive 992 EUR per month for a Master’s degree or postgraduate programme at a state or state-recognised higher education institution in Germany. The funding lasts for up to 24 months (from 10 months), depending on the duration of your degree programme. You will also receive health, accident and third-party liability insurance, an annual study grant of 460 EUR and, upon application, a flat-rate travel allowance. The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) will cover the costs of an online German language course. It may also fund a face-to-face German language course before you commence your studies and will cover the examination fee for a German language test such as TestDaF or DSH. Rent and family allowances may be available once your funding has commenced. The funding comes from the Federal Foreign Office. After your first year, your performance will be reviewed, and the scholarship will be continued provided you meet the requirements. Tuition fees are not covered.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have completed your first degree (Bachelor’s, Licenciatura, Grado, Diplom or equivalent qualification) by the start of the funding period.
• How recent: As a general rule, your most recent qualification must not have been obtained more than six years prior to the application deadline.
• Where you live now: You live in Spain but do not hold Spanish nationality. Applicants of any other nationality may apply.
• Link to Spain: You have studied at a Spanish university for at least one year or obtained your most recent degree there.
• Field of study: Open to all disciplines, with the exception of architecture, fine art, design, film, the performing arts and music, for which there are separate DAAD programmes.
• Language: You must have at least level B2 in the language in which your Master’s programme is taught (German or English) and provide a certificate that is no more than three years old.
• Time in Germany: At the time of the application deadline, you must not have been in Germany for more than 15 months. You cannot receive funding for a Master’s degree programme that you have already started there.
• Grades: You are among the top graduates in your department.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the DAAD portal (my.daad.de). The application window opens on 1 June, and the deadline for applications for the 2027 cycle is 19 January 2027. An independent panel of experts will assess the applications. The selection process takes place in May 2027, and funding begins from October 2027.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is aimed at a specific target group: non-Spanish graduates living in Spain. As a result, the pool of applicants is smaller than for the DAAD scholarships that are open to all. If you clearly belong to this group, have good grades, a well-thought-out study plan and a prospective host university in Germany, your chances are good. A convincing personal statement and proof of your language skills are just as important here as your grades.
