A PhD scholarship is a paid contract for the period during which you are writing your doctoral thesis. You will receive approximately 1,400 EUR per month to complete your doctoral thesis at the University of Granada in Spain, and the university will cover your tuition fees for the PhD programme. The salary is based on the Spanish salary scale for early-career researchers (EPIF) and is paid over twelve months, including a pro-rata share of the annual special payments. The contract is initially for one year and may be extended for up to a maximum of four years. Funding is provided on a cumulative basis: An external company or institution will pay at least 75%, and the university’s research fund will contribute 25%. The aim is to link your research to a topic of significance to a company, so that you gain both a PhD and professional experience.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You hold a qualification that entitles you to pursue a PhD: a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification worth at least 300 ECTS credits.
• Admission: You have been admitted to a PhD programme at the University of Granada.
• Where you study: Your research will take place in Granada and will be supervised by a researcher from the University of Granada. Part of the work may be carried out at the partner company.
• Field of study: Any topic is possible, provided that an external partner helps to fund your dissertation topic.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• Other funding: You may not receive any other public or private funding of the same kind at the same time.

How to apply

Please apply via the University of Granada Research Office’s online system. The application deadline is 30 September, and the next call for applications will be announced on 2026. In practice, a supervisor first establishes a partnership with an external company, and only then is the post advertised to applicants.

How realistic are your chances?

Each scholarship requires a specific thesis to be co-funded by an external company; consequently, there are only a few places available, and each is linked to a specific research topic. It is best if you already have a supervisor and a willing partner on board. An applicant who is a good fit for an existing, funded project has good prospects, whereas a speculative application without such a partner is considerably more difficult.
