About this scholarship

Traineeship at the Cantabrian Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology

During your work placement at the Museum of Prehistory, Early History and Archaeology of Cantabria (MUPAC) in Santander, Spain, you will receive 800 EUR gross per month for up to 12 months. The work is practical in nature: you will catalogue, inventory and manage the museum’s archaeological collections. The placement is funded by the Regional Government of Cantabria, and two places are usually offered in each call for applications.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a Spanish citizen or a national of another EU country.
  • Degree: You hold a university degree in history or an equivalent qualification recognised in Spain.
  • How recent: You completed your degree no more than 5 years before the application deadline.
  • Where you study: Any university is suitable. The work placement takes place at MUPAC in Santander.
  • Previous grants: You have received training grants from the Cantabrian Government for a total of less than 2 years.
  • Clean record: You have never been dismissed from public service on disciplinary grounds and are physically capable of carrying out the work.

How to apply

You can apply online via the Cantabrian Government’s electronic register or in person in Santander. You have 20 working days from the day after the vacancy is published in the region’s Official Gazette (Boletín Oficial de Cantabria). An earlier application deadline ended on 21 May. Firstly, your academic results and relevant professional experience will be assessed. The five best candidates will then be invited to an interview and a practical test.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a highly selective scholarship: only around two places are awarded per call for applications, which are open to history graduates who have completed their degree within the last 5 years and are able to work full-time in Santander. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning a well-suited candidate stands a fair chance. Fieldwork, laboratory experience and specialist courses (for example, in the typology of ceramic or stone materials) are taken directly into account in the assessment; you should therefore document these carefully. Vacancies are advertised only occasionally, and there are currently none available.
