Severo Ochoa short-stay travel grants

For a research stay abroad lasting from 30 to 90 days, you will receive 40 EUR per day as well as a flat-rate travel allowance. This amounts to up to 600 EUR for a trip to an EU or EFTA country, or up to 1,200 EUR for more distant destinations. If your destination is outside Europe, you may also apply for up to 300 EUR towards accident and health insurance. The total amount of all benefits is capped at 3,000 EUR per person per year. The grant is paid by the Regional Government of Asturias (Principado de Asturias) in Spain. A total budget of 200,000 EUR is available for the 2026 round, which may be increased by 100,000 EUR.

Who can apply

• Current Severo Ochoa fellow: You are the holder of an active Severo Ochoa doctoral scholarship from Asturias, which funds a doctoral contract. The year in which the scholarship was awarded is irrelevant, and you may apply as early as your first year.
• Where you go: The placement must take place at a recognised research centre outside Spain, which is different from the centre where you are carrying out your Severo Ochoa research.
• Purpose: The visit is for training: learning in research labs, picking up new instrument techniques, or other work tied directly to your doctoral plan.
• Field of study: Open to all fields of research.
• Limits per applicant: You may only apply for one stay per year, and a maximum of two short stays will be funded for you under this programme.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Principality of Asturias’ electronic register. You will need a brief description of your planned stay, signed by your supervisor, as well as a letter of acceptance from the host institution. For 2026, the application window runs from 18 February to 17 March 2026. Applications are assessed on the basis of the quality and ranking of the host institution, as well as whether you have already completed previous short stays and the extent to which the stay is relevant to your doctoral thesis.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: only active Severo Ochoa PhD scholarship holders from Asturias are eligible to apply, so the pool of eligible candidates is very small. The budget may be increased to accommodate more applications, and in a previous round all applications were approved; the prospects are therefore good if you clearly meet the eligibility criteria. A prestigious host institution and a placement that ties in with your PhD thesis will strengthen your chances.
