George Watson Scholar Award

When you start your mathematics degree at University of Birmingham, you will receive a one-off payment of about 1,150 EUR (£1,000). This is a one-off payment, not a monthly scholarship. The University’s Faculty of Mathematics automatically awards this sum to new mathematics students who achieve the required grades. It is named after George Neville Watson, a professor of pure mathematics at Birmingham.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are starting a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics. This includes degree programmes with Mathematics as the main subject, with Mathematics as a main or minor subject, and dual degree programmes with Mathematics as one of the two main subjects.
• Your choice: You list ‘Mathematics in Birmingham’ as your ‘firm choice’ on UCAS, the central application system for higher education institutions in the UK. This means that Birmingham is your confirmed first choice.
• Grades (A-level): You have achieved grades A*A* in Maths and one other subject (general studies do not count).
• Grades (International Baccalaureate): You have achieved 40 marks, of which 7 are in Advanced Level Mathematics.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.

How to apply

No separate application is required. You will receive the award automatically once you have met the grade requirements and listed ‘Birmingham Maths’ as your first choice on UCAS.

How realistic are your chances?

There is neither a competitive selection process nor an admissions panel, so you cannot lose this place to other applicants. If you achieve A*A* (or 40 IB points with a 7 in Maths) and list Birmingham as your first choice, you will be offered the place. The only real hurdle is the grade threshold, which is high. If you meet it, the money is yours.
