About this scholarship

Research Year Grant (Bourse Année Recherche)

You will receive approximately EUR 20,000 for one year to devote a full academic year to research, rather than pursuing your usual specialist medical training. The amount corresponds to the salary of a junior doctor in their first year of service. During this year, you will complete a Master’s degree 2 (a one-year, research-oriented Master’s programme) and work full-time in a research laboratory. The scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Medicine (UFR3S) at the University of Lille. Several scholarships are awarded each year. During the research year, you cannot continue your specialist training, but you may continue to undertake on-call duties, provided the University Hospital (CHU) agrees to this.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a junior doctor undertaking specialist training (DES) and would like to undertake a Master’s degree programme in 2 in order to acquire the fundamentals of research.
  • Master 1 done: You must have successfully completed the theoretical part of your Master’s degree 1 before submitting your application. If this has not yet been fully validated, you will be placed on the reserve list.
  • Research lab: You have already found a host laboratory. A laboratory outside Lille is permitted, but you must explain your reasons for this in your personal statement. If the laboratory is abroad, please contact the International Relations Office first.
  • Field: Medicine only.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

Please email your complete application as a single PDF file by 31 March 2026 at 16:00 to the Department of Medicine for the academic year 2026–2027. Each project will be assessed by one or two independent experts. A committee comprising faculty members and representatives from the doctoral school will then draw up a ranking list of applications at the end of May. The number of grants will be determined at the end of June, and the deans will make the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must be a junior doctor in Lille, have already completed a Master’s degree in 1, and have access to a research laboratory as well as a completed project, which means that the pool of eligible candidates is small. Several scholarships are awarded each year, and the committee assesses you on the basis of your CV, your project and your suitability for a career in the hospital and academic sectors. A well-prepared applicant with a strong laboratory and a clear plan has solid prospects. A convincing, well-reasoned project is more important than a highly polished one.
