About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a one-year research fellowship to work on your doctoral thesis for 12 months. The University of Helsinki Foundation awards this fellowship each year in memory of Matti Klinge (1936–2023), one of Finland’s leading historians. Your research must relate to one of the following three topics: the role, history and social significance of the University of Helsinki; universities and university-related issues in general; or the cultural, intellectual and theoretical history of Finland and Europe.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a PhD student and are currently working on your thesis. Most applicants already hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
  • Field: Your work falls within the field of history, cultural studies or the history of ideas and deals with one of the three topics mentioned.
  • University: You study or research at the University of Helsinki, which mainly funds its own people.
  • Nationality: You are a Finnish citizen.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the University of Helsinki’s funding portal during the annual application round. This runs from mid-January to 6 February. For 2026, the application window runs from 14 January to 6 February, until 23:59. You must attach your academic transcript. Decisions will be made by the end of April, and each applicant will be informed personally of the outcome.
