About this scholarship
Gyllenberg Foundation doctoral grant
You receive up to 10,000 EUR to fund your doctoral research, for a period of up to 2 years. The foundation's board sets the exact amount each year at its autumn budget meeting and matches it to your research plan. The Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation in Helsinki funds medical and natural science research on how the mind affects physical health, and on blood diseases. Across all its grant types, it awarded 3.1 million EUR in its 2026 round. The grant does not cover overhead costs.
Who can apply
- Level: You are a doctoral student. You have been accepted onto doctoral studies, or your project is registered at an academic institution.
- Background: You have a background in medicine or natural science. You also have the skills, a workplace and supervision to carry out the project.
- Research topic: Your project fits one of the foundation's focus areas: how psychological factors trigger or influence physical illness and how to treat it; a holistic view of well-being, including palliative care, medical ethics and the effect of art on health; or blood diseases, both malignant and benign.
- Supervisor: You have a supervisor who recommends you. You apply in your own name, not as part of a senior researcher's or research group's application.
- Nationality and university: Any nationality can apply, and you are not tied to a particular university.
How to apply
You apply online through the foundation's grant system. The application period runs each year from 24 December to 31 January. A medical committee first checks that your project fits the foundation's purpose and has scientific value. The board then makes the final decision.
