About this scholarship

Societas pro Fauna et Flora Fennica research grant

You get money for thesis fieldwork on Finland's wildlife and plants. For a master's thesis, you can apply for up to 2,000 EUR as a one-off payment. It covers data-collection costs such as travel, materials or living expenses. For a doctoral thesis, you can apply for up to 2,100 EUR per month for a maximum of 6 months. Doctoral students who are members of the Society can claim up to 2,000 EUR extra for equipment and travel linked to gathering and presenting their data. The grants come from Societas pro Fauna et Flora Fennica (SFFF), a Finnish research society that supports the study of the country's animals and plants.

Who can apply

  • Study level: You are writing a master's or doctoral thesis. The grant does not cover research after a PhD.
  • Research topic: Your project is about the animals or plants of Finland, with a focus on native species living in the wild.
  • Field of study: Biology and related areas such as zoology, botany, taxonomy and ecology.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Membership: You do not have to be a member of the Society. But if two applications are otherwise equal, members are chosen first. Only PhD members can claim the extra equipment and travel allowance.
  • Repeat limit: You can receive a grant for the same purpose at most twice, or three times in exceptional cases.

How to apply

You apply twice a year through an online form on the University of Helsinki platform. It only opens during the two application periods: 1 to 28 February (29 February in leap years) in spring, and 15 September to 15 October in autumn. You submit a research plan of up to 4 pages, a budget and a CV, combined into a single PDF or Word file.
