About this scholarship

France-Stanford Visiting Student Researcher Fellowship

You will receive up to about 14,260 EUR (15,500 USD) for a research stay of up to 4 months (at least two months). The grant covers travel, accommodation and living expenses (including childcare), research materials, and services such as transcriptions or surveys. The exact amount depends on the duration of your stay. If you come to Stanford, the grant also covers the monthly tuition fees for visiting researchers. The grant (a funded research stay) is funded by the France-Stanford Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, which fosters research links between Stanford and institutions in France and other French-speaking countries. It does not cover the costs of equipment, software, publication fees, conference fees or salaries.

  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. You do not need to be a French or US citizen.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online via Slideroom. You will need a research proposal, a letter from your supervisor, a letter of recommendation, your CV, a transcript of your academic record and a financial plan. The application deadline for 2026-27 was 9. March 2026. The next application round for 2027-28 begins in October 2026. You will receive a response in late spring or early summer.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is highly selective. Applicants must be studying at an institution in France or a French-speaking country (or at Stanford University), have a specific research project to present, and have secured a host faculty member in advance. This preliminary work weeds out casual applicants, meaning the pool of candidates is smaller than for open scholarships. If you clearly meet the criteria and are applying for the first time, your chances are good.
