In the case of a jointly supervised PhD programme (a ‘cotutelle’), your travel and accommodation costs will be covered up to a maximum of 3 months. A cotutelle means that you enrol simultaneously at the University of Lyon 3 and at a partner university abroad. Following a single joint defence, you will receive a doctoral degree from each university. The scholarship covers your alternating stays abroad. The exact amount is determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on where you are travelling to and the nature of your stay. Who can apply

• Level: You are enrolled as a PhD student at Jean Moulin University in Lyon 3 and hold a valid enrolment certificate for the current academic year.
• Timing: You are in the first or second year of your PhD and are not yet close to completing your thesis.
• Cotutelle set-up: Your dissertation will be supervised in collaboration with a partner university abroad, and both your supervisors and your research unit will support your trip.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: The scheme is open to people of all nationalities, but you must be resident in France at the time of application.
• Grades: Selection is based on academic performance.

How to apply

You should submit your application to the university’s doctoral office. Your application should be received there no later than three weeks before your planned stay. The separate cotutelle agreement, which governs dual enrolment, is a complex process that takes some time to draw up and requires several months for approval by both universities.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very restrictive. You must already be enrolled at the University of Lyon 3 in your first or second year of study and be involved in a formal cotutelle arrangement with a foreign partner, meaning that only a small number of students meet the eligibility criteria. If you clearly meet these conditions and your supervisors support the trip, your chances are good. Make sure you apply well in advance of your stay, as the Research Office processes applications on a rolling basis.
