What the FSDIE social grant gives you

You will receive a one-off payment to cover certain costs if you find yourself in financial difficulty whilst studying. The amount is determined on a case-by-case basis, so there is no fixed sum and no monthly payment. Jean Moulin Lyon University 3 funds this through the FSDIE, a solidarity fund for students, which is mainly financed by tuition fees. The money covers a specific expense. Examples include travel costs for a work placement, a period abroad as part of an exchange programme, textbooks or equipment, additional costs related to a disability, or any other situation that jeopardises your studies.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at Jean Moulin University in Lyon 3.
• Type of study: You are enrolled on a standard full-time degree programme. Continuing professional development courses for working adults and distance-learning programmes are not taken into account, unless your distance-learning programme is due to an illness or disability.
• Financial need: You are in financial difficulty and can explain this during a meeting with a social worker at CROUS, the French student services organisation.
• Field of study: Anyone interested is very welcome.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• How often: You may receive a maximum of two FSDIE scholarships per cycle of study – for example, one during your Bachelor’s degree and one during your Master’s degree – provided you are studying in Lyon 3.

How to apply

Make an appointment with a social worker at the Pôle Vie Étudiante. Download the two application forms from the student intranet, Net3, complete them and hand them in at your appointment. A committee meets several times a year to make a decision. Two of the deadlines are 29 January and 4 April, and your documents must be submitted 10 to 15 days before each meeting. You should therefore apply well in advance.

How realistic are your chances?

This support is intended exclusively for students at the University of Lyon 3 who can demonstrate a genuine financial need; the target group is therefore limited. If you clearly meet the eligibility criteria and provide the documents requested by the social worker, your chances are good. Funds are limited and restricted to two grants per cycle of study; consequently, a well-founded, specific case will take precedence over a vague one.
