Scam - "Brouillons d'un rêve" Grants- Literary Work

What you get

You will receive a one-off grant of 2,500 EUR to 6,000 EUR (before tax) to support you in writing a literary work in French. The jury will determine the exact amount; you do not need to specify an amount yourself. The money will be paid out as a lump sum, four to five weeks after you have signed an agreement with Scam (Société civile des auteurs multimédia), a French authors’ association which administers the grant. It is intended to support a work you are currently writing, and you may combine it with other funding.

Who can apply

• Who you are: Anyone aged 18 years or over. Companies, publishers and organisations are not eligible to apply.
• Nationality and residence: Any nationality and any place of residence.
• Experience: Not required. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a member of Scam or not.
• Language: You must write the work in French, and your application must be in French too.
• Type of project: A novel, biography, memoir, diary, comic, graphic novel, poetry, letters or essay, fiction or non-fiction. It must deal with literature, publishing, photography, cinema, radio, television or new media.
• Stage of the project: Your work must still be in progress. Works that are complete or nearly complete are not eligible, and the grant cannot be used to fund publication or printing costs.
• Timing rules: You may submit one project per calendar year for all Scam funding schemes. You may resubmit a rejected project only once. If you have already received funding, you must wait three calendar years.

How to apply

Applications are accepted once a year via Scam’s online form. The application period runs from 10 to 15 October, and the deadline is midnight on 15 October. Only 150 projects are accepted per round, and the call for applications closes automatically as soon as all places have been filled. You should therefore apply early. A panel of fellow authors will assess the projects over a period of around five months, and you will be notified of the result by email.

How realistic are your chances?

The funding competition is open to applicants worldwide, with no restrictions on age, place of residence or experience, and therefore attracts a wide range of applicants. However, the cap of 150 projects and the narrowly defined theme ensure that the pool of applicants remains manageable. If your current project clearly fits one of the specified topics and is written in French, your chances are good. It is important to apply in the first few days of October, as the call for applications will close as soon as the cap of 150 projects is reached.
