Departmental Council of Charente - Charente Research Fellowship

Benefit

You will receive 6,000 EUR per year for your doctoral thesis and up to 10,000 EUR per year if your research focuses exclusively on a site in the French department of Charente. If your research relates mainly, but not exclusively, to a site in Charente, you will receive 6,000 EUR. The scholarship runs for one year and may be renewed up to twice, bringing the total duration to three years. It is awarded by the Charente Departmental Council (Conseil départemental de la Charente), which supports research in the fields of archaeology, history and palaeontology relating to this region.

Eligibility

• Degree level: You are enrolled as a PhD student.
• Research topic: Your research focuses entirely or largely on a location in the French department of Charente.
• Field of study: You work in the fields of archaeology, history or palaeontology.
• Supervisor backing: Your supervisor will provide you with written support for your project.
• Nationality: Anyone can apply, regardless of their nationality.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the department’s funding portal, Subventions16. You will need a letter of motivation, a CV, a description of your research project signed by your supervisor, proof of enrolment, and copies of your degree certificates and academic transcripts. There is no fixed application deadline. If you are selected, you will sign an agreement with the department.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. Your doctoral thesis must focus on a specific location in the Charente department and fall within the field of archaeology, history or palaeontology. As a result, the pool of eligible candidates is small, meaning that a doctoral student with a clearly relevant topic and strong support from their supervisor has good prospects. The number of scholarships awarded each year depends on the quality of the applications and the available budget; therefore, a well-reasoned project clearly focused on the Charente will stand out in particular.
