About this scholarship
Benefit
You will receive a one-off grant of up to 1,200 EUR for a field research trip as part of your PhD. The funding covers field research in the Americas: North America, Latin America or the Caribbean. In exceptional cases, it may also cover archival research in a European country, provided that your research topic requires it. The Institut des Amériques, a public research network based in Paris, awards approximately 20 of these grants each year.
Eligibility
- Degree level: You are a PhD student and are writing a thesis on America or a part of America.
- Where you study: You are enrolled at a French institution that is part of the Institut des Amériques network.
- Timing: You must be in at least your second year of your PhD programme, and the trip must take place this year or later.
- Field of study: Any discipline within the humanities or social sciences, provided your research relates to the Americas. Comparative, trans-American and interdisciplinary projects are welcome, provided you explain your approach.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The key requirement is that you are studying at a member institution in France.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via the online platform at ard2027.sciencescall.org. For round 2027, the application deadline is 12 June 2026 at 23:00. The Institute’s Scientific Advisory Board and its regional centres make the decision jointly, and the results are usually announced in November.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is aimed at a narrowly defined target group: PhD students at a partner university in France who, from their second year of study onwards, are working on a research project relating to America. As a result, the pool of applicants remains small, and around 20 scholarships are awarded each year. If you clearly meet these criteria and submit a well-reasoned fieldwork plan, your chances are good.
