About this scholarship

Benefit

“Science Without Borders” (Ciência sem Fronteiras) was a scholarship programme run by the Brazilian government for Brazilian students who wished to study or undertake research abroad in a STEM subject (science, technology, engineering or mathematics). It covered the costs of living in the host country. In addition, free language courses and TOEFL preparation courses were funded to help applicants meet the English language requirements. The programme ran from 2011 to 2017 and funded almost 104,000 scholarships in 30 countries, most commonly in the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Canada. The Brazilian federal government funded the programme through its agencies CAPES and CNPq.

Eligibility

  • Nationality: You were a Brazilian student.
  • Level: Students at all stages of their studies – from Bachelor’s to Master’s degree programmes, as well as PhD students and postdoctoral researchers – are eligible to apply.
  • Field of study: You have studied a STEM subject or another field that is considered a priority area for development in Brazil.
  • Language: You could demonstrate your knowledge of foreign languages, particularly English.

How to apply

“Science Without Borders” is no longer accepting applications. The Brazilian Ministry of Education officially discontinued the programme in April 2017. By the end of 2015, no new scholarships had been awarded due to the political and economic crisis in Brazil. If you would like to receive funding from Brazil to study abroad, find out about CAPES’ successor programmes, which focus more on postgraduate study than on undergraduate study.
