Open University - Dependants’ Fund

Benefit

This fund, run by the Open University in the United Kingdom, helps you cover the additional costs of caring for dependants – such as children or relatives who rely on your support – whilst you are studying for a research degree. The amount of the grant depends on your application, so there is no fixed amount. The fund is administered by the Graduate School Network, which supports doctoral students at the university.

Eligibility

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the Open University on a research programme such as a PhD or MPhil, not on a taught programme.
• Your situation: You are looking after family members, such as children or relatives, and need help with the associated costs.
• Field of study: All research participants are welcome to apply.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at the Open University.

Please complete the application form for the Maintenance Fund on the Graduate School Network website and submit it whilst you are studying. There is no fixed deadline, so you can apply as soon as you need the support.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund is open exclusively to research students at the Open University who are caring for dependants; the target group is therefore small. If you are enrolled and can provide evidence of actual care costs, your chances are good. The fund was set up to help students in your situation, not to organise a competition.
